PRINT & FINISH / 03
Bring selected details into the light.
Use a clear gloss accent to highlight a logo, pattern or illustration against the surrounding surface. Plan spot UV as a separate decorative layer, with the coating and substrate reviewed together.
Details that shape the final effect.
Choose the contrast
A selected gloss area can catch the light against a quieter surrounding finish. Decide which detail needs emphasis and review the effect from several angles rather than judging it from a flat image.
Separate the UV mask
Keep the gloss area in a clearly named vector mask aligned with the colour artwork. Review very small text, gaps and edges with the production team before setting the final detail.
Check the finished surface
Confirm coating adhesion, scuff behaviour and the finish around folds on the selected material. A flat sample and an assembled package answer different questions about appearance and handling.
Choose where the effect belongs.
| Design direction | What to specify | Sample review |
|---|---|---|
| Logo highlight | Clear gloss over a chosen brand element | Mask alignment and visibility under changing light |
| Pattern contrast | Selective gloss across a quieter background | Coverage, continuity and handling marks |
| Raised gloss request | A specifically requested raised coating effect | Available process, height reference and sample feel |
Approve the effect on the actual material.
A digital preview helps place the design. Use a physical finishing reference to agree the surface appearance, then review the selected finish on the intended paper and assembled structure. Ask for project-specific compatibility, tooling and quantity details before confirming production.
A few useful answers
Is spot UV the same as UV printing?
Spot UV describes a selective clear coating effect. UV printing refers to a printing approach using UV-cured inks. State whether you need printed artwork, a gloss accent or both.
Will spot UV feel raised?
The tactile result depends on the selected coating process. If a pronounced raised effect is important, request it explicitly and use a physical sample to agree the result.
